Create a promo code
Start with an agreed campaign and an existing subscription in the intended publication. Know the discount, eligible subscription, availability dates and activation limit before opening the form.
The City Journal example below is fictional. CJNOV20 is an example string, not a usable code.
1. Confirm the publication and subscription
Check the publication name in the Admin header. Confirm the intended subscription already exists under the correct Plan. For this example, that is Monthly under Reporting.
If the publication or required controls are missing, follow the publication and Admin access checks before continuing.
2. Open the creation form
Open Promo Codes in the Admin navigation, then Add new promo code.
Enter a Title for the campaign and a Code. The title can contain up to 25 characters; use a code of 6–40 characters. The code must not already belong to another promo in this publication.
3. Set the campaign conditions
Use these example settings to understand the form, replacing them with your own agreed campaign values:
| Field | Fictional City Journal value |
|---|---|
| Title | City Journal November |
| Code | CJNOV20 |
| Discount Type | percent |
| Discount | 20 — the percentage input shows % |
| Activations limit | 100; leave Unlimited unchecked |
| Availability dates | Start 11/01/2026; end 11/30/2026, using both date fields |
| Plans and subscriptions | Select only Monthly under Reporting |
| Available for all plans | Leave unchecked |
| Events, Bundles and Contents | Leave empty, with their corresponding all-item checkboxes unchecked |
| Description | Optional: November Reporting subscription campaign |
The subscription selector groups choices by Plan. Select the subscription itself. An empty selection with Available for all plans unchecked does not include every subscription. At least one purchase selection or corresponding all-item choice is required to save.
The date fields set a validity window. Do not assume the end date means the end of that entire calendar day in your readers' timezone. Agree the intended boundary with the integration owner before announcing the campaign.
For this example, keep the unrelated item selections empty and their all-item checkboxes unchecked so the promotion covers the selected subscription.
4. Review and save
Compare the entered code, percentage, selected subscription, two dates and limit with the agreed campaign. Read discount eligibility and limits before saving.
Click Save. A successful save returns you to the promo-code list. If the form reports a problem, review its feedback and the entered fields before trying again.
Save creates the configured promo; there is no separate draft or inactive choice in this form. Once its date, count and purchase conditions permit, the saved code can be used. Plan the values before saving.
5. Inspect the saved record
Find the campaign by its Title or Code in the promo-code list. Open its # link to inspect the saved form and confirm the values, especially the subscription selection and all-item checkboxes.
Use Review a promo code and its usage for a fuller inspection. Checking the saved configuration does not require distributing the code or making a customer purchase.
